Color Mixing with Greenery, Pantone 2017 Color of the Year

I always love working with Pantone's Color of the Year because even if I don't immediately recognize it as "the hue" of the moment, I'll soon start noticing it everywhere and appreciating how it fits into different scenarios. This year's choice, Greenery, is both vibrant and calming because of its natural omnipresence in our world. It's used a lot in architecture, graphic design, and marketing because it symbolizes nature and works so well with other colors. I'm sharing some examples of how it can be mixed with other colors, and therefore, how it could be incorporated into your design work, interiors, or personal style this year. These are five very different mood boards with five very different tones and moods. Scroll through and let me know which one is your favorite!

Weekly Roundup 1.11

Welcome back to the weekly roundup! It's been a while since I posted my regular roundup, and I've missed celebrating my favorite links in style, art, design, and more from around the web. Here are some of the finds I've been loving lately.

1  I'm crazy about the thoughtfully-layered items in Anna Valdez's still life paintings, especially the intricately patterned rugs. They feel so fresh and vibrant, but also homey and comfortable. (Anna Valdez)  |  2  Do you like to read the original book before seeing the big screen adaptation like I do? If so, here's a list of 10 books to read before they hit theaters in 2017. (The Everygirl)

3  These DIY rose petal bath salts seem pretty simple to make and would make seriously gorgeous gifts for your friends on Valentine's Day. (Paper & Stitch)  |  4  This Brooklyn home tour has loads of creative inspiration and organization ideas for the home that's big on artistic vision but short on space. I'm particularly fond of this rolling rack/plant hanger/book shelf combo. (Apartment Therapy)

5  Sometimes I like to share thought-provoking videos to make you question your entire life's philosophies. This is not one of those times. I hope you're all okay with that situation. (The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon)

I always admire Elise's one second a day videos and wish I could commit to one myself.

Some of the stunners from the Golden Globes.

I, too, love Josh Radnor.

And also these whimsical mermaid notebooks.

Some home office inspiration. How great is the dotted desk?

Tips for beating sugar cravings from Liz.

I'm loving Candace's eyewear style post, especially the metallic skirt look.

What are your favorite finds this week?

GREENERY // Pantone's Color of the Year 2017

Greenery is in as the official Pantone Color of the Year for 2017. According to Pantone, the bright, zesty green with a hint of yellow was chosen for it's ability to evoke spring, a fresh start, and to "revive, restore, and renew."

Green is often considered "nature's neutral" because of it's abundance in our environment and omnipresence around the world. From far eastern matcha tea powders and tropical palm leaves to the grass and trees in your own back yard, it can at once bring a feeling of exoticism and comfort. A color so universal evokes a sense of both global oneness and personal vitality.

How do you feel about Greenery as the color for 2017?

For a color so universally abundant, the response has been a bit more polarizing. I've seen lots of comments from people, likely put off by the yellow tint, who can't see a hue like this being incorporated into their wardrobe, decor, or day-to-day life for fear of it being unflattering. If you're on that side of the fence, I'll be exploring the versatility of Greenery next week with different color combinations and ideas of how to incorporate into your current style. So make sure to check that out. And if you're already team green, here are some items to shop to kick of 2017 in Pantone-celebrated style.

Latherology Giveaway!

Latherology-Giveaway-Shampoo-Bottle

Hair, hair, hair... As we sweat it out in the final days of summer this seems to be one of my most talked about, or I guess I should say griped about, topics. You see, it's a Wills family trait to have very, very (I'm talking abnormally) thick hair. Enough hair for several people thick. This is both a blessing and curse, but amidst all this humidity it's definitely been feeling like more of a curse as of late. In the heat, my hair gets dry, frizzy, and just completely massive.

In times like these, my hair requires some extra tender lovin'. It needs hydrated, it needs managed, and it needs to be cared for as gently and simply as possible. Less fuss = less frizz = a much happier me. Latherology-Giveaway-Shampoo-Conditioner-Formulas

So I was THRILLED to get the opportunity to try Latherology, a hair care company that believes in high-quality ingredients and a simple approach. Their Cleanse and Condition products are made with 100% essential oils, so they are extra nourishing, and are sulfate- and paraben-free, so your hair won't get weighed down with unnecessary build up. They are also non-toxic, cruelty-free, and contain no formeldahyde, lye, parabens, sulfates, phosphates, phthalates, SLS, or sodium chloride. Bottom line: it's what my hair wants and needs and nothing else.

But I haven't even told you the coolest part yet. When you order a Latherology set you get to create your own custom mix from start to finish! The first step is choosing a base, either one for natural or treated hair. I went with the latter to give my processed hair some extra nourishment, and because, like I said earlier, it is D-R-Y.

Next, you get to choose between five different carrier oils. These bad boys don't carry a scent, but each essential carrier oil provides unique nourishing benefits, so you can choose based on what your hair needs most. I knew I needed a lot of moisture, but I have also been feeling like my hair is just so heavy these days, so I inevitably chose grapeseed oil for it's conditioning properties but also because it is lightweight.

Finally, the part I found the most fun, choosing your scents! I spent more time than I'd like to admit happily making scent mixes. I finally decided on frankincense and eucalyptus because I wanted something meditative and relaxing, and I have no regrets. It smells really nice, but more than that, the scent makes me amaaaaazing. As in zoned-out, trip-to-the-spa, pure bliss amazing.

Latherology-Giveaway-Shampoo-Conditioner-Box

I kind of knew what I wanted going into the mixing process: moisture, more moisture, and a calming scent combo. But if you want a little bit more of a guide, Latherology also has this really cool quiz tool to help you come up with some combinations for your own specific needs.

Would you like a chance to try a custom blend yourself? Well, good news! The kind folks at Latherology are offering a FREE custom blend to one lucky reader! Just hop on over to this post on Instagram and follow the super-simple entry rules for your chance to win! The giveaway will run until this Sunday (8/28) at 11:59 pm, so get tagging!

And if you just can't wait to try your own, you're also in luck! Latherology is offering readers $7 off their first order when you use the code SAVE$7FWS at checkout. Your hair will be so happy.

FRIDAY VIBES // Summer Braids

Braids in summer are the perfect combo: you get to keep your hair off your face and still rock some major style. Plus they're pretty much the ultimate solution to less-than-perfect hair woes, from hiding roots to extended your wash for another day. This week I'm looking to the ladies of Instagram for their endless braid creativity. I'm crazy about these looks, especially the newer trends of braid rings and mixed textures.

Giveaway with Tanger Outlets and The Limited

Tanger-Outlets-The-Limited-Giveaway-Main-Image

The Limited and L Brands were founded right here in Columbus, Ohio, and they're a MAJOR reason why Columbus is considered the third leading fashion city in the US. Obviously, I love any chance I get to work with and celebrate them, so I was thrilled when they reached out to me about The Limited Outlet, which recently opened up in Columbus' new Tanger Outlets. I loved my visit to the outlet and was pleasantly surprised with the selection (and ALL those discount tags!). The store was full of stylish finds and was merchandised and organized just like the standard store. Outlet shopping has really come along way!

But enough about my shopping trip, you want to hear about winning a spree of your own, am I right? Well, you're in luck! The Limited at Tanger Outlets has been kind enough to offer one reader a $100 gift card! Read on to find out how you can win!

I really love the essence of The Limited brand in general, which, in my opinion, is to make the lives of busy women both stylish and easy. These pieces are classic and well-made, so you can get a lot of wear from them, and they're also the perfect choices for days that require you to wear your many hats, from career gal, to mom, to life of the party. The styles can help you feel polished and put together but also have enough comfort and ease to make them your everyday go-to looks. That's a combination that is pretty hard to beat!

I styled a few outfits with some of my favorite finds at The Limited Outlet.

Tanger-Outlets-The-Limited-Giveaway-Flatlays-2

1. Bell of the Ball.  How great is this bell-sleeved boho top? And I'm crazy about those wide leg flares. Toss on that layered gold chain necklace and some chunky platforms and you've got a super stylish, easy look.

2. Easily PerSUEDEd.  I love the rich tone on this teal faux-suede shift dress. From a work presentation to a wedding toast, this dress could go anywhere with you in any season. I added coral, white, and gold accessories to give it a fresher, more summery feel.

3. Skirting the Issues.  More faux-suede, this time in the perfect ballerina pink, paired with a fun fringe skirt and denim shirt. You could wear this look with sneakers and a top knot for a cool daytime look or throw on the marble stone necklace and some heels for a dressed-up, downtown vibe.

4. Fringe Benefits.  The picture doesn't do this fringed knit top justice. It's got some texture, some stretch, some metallic, and is basically my dream shirt. Teamed up with a pair of very on-trend destructed-hem denim and a coordinating tassel necklace and bag, this look has so much fringe and yet is still so chic.

DRESS YOUR NEST // Vintage Summer Boho Style

My mom has been on a bit of a minimalism kick lately and has been clearing out a lot of her storage. Almost every time I talk to her she's cleaning out some closet shelf or dresser drawer- it's impressive. It's also been really fun for me and my sisters because she'll have a cleaning spree and then send us a group text with pictures of things she's giving away. It's a bit like an auction, seeing who can claim things the fastest or who's holding out for the big ticket items. The best part is that I now have boxes of beautiful treasures, from actual antiques to shabby chic Home Goods finds, waiting for me to bring home.

My mom's style is very feminine and she has a great eye for charming vintage details, and I think that vibe is just perfect for summer. The natural, more rustic elements feel laid-back and simple while the vintage touches provide romance and a little glamour. Here are some of my favorite finds for incorporating this style into your home decor or your personal wardrobe.

FRIDAY VIBES // Viva Vivetta!

Friday-Vibes-Vivetta-Hands-Collar-Blouse-Gold

A lot of designers are talented and make beautiful clothes, but Vivì Ponti, the genius behind the label Vivetta, goes beyond that: she makes my soul sing! Her surrealistic clothing and accessories (those collars!) seem both classic, with their clear Schiaparelli-esque style notes, and entirely modern. I mean, have you really ever seen anything like these pieces? Vivetta is fresh, dreamy, and completely inspiring. I. AM. OBSESSED!

FRIDAY VIBES // You're a Grand Old Flag

Friday-Vibes-America-Mario-Testino-Editorial

Happy Fourth of July Weekend! It's a big one for our family because both my dad and his dad were born on the 4th. It's pretty much as big as Christmas for us. I'm really looking forward to celebrating them, cooking out, and just having some relaxed family time. It will also be a big weekend for fashion, as stars & stripes are having an even bigger moment than usual as of late. I absolutely love this motif both for its graphic nature and glam rock vibes. It's classic but also feels a little bit rebellious, don't you think?

FRIDAY VIBES // The Rainbow Connection

Friday-Vibes-Rainbow-Bright-Sleep-All-Day

Happy National Pride Month! It seems like world news and political opinions, especially here in the US, get progressively more aggressive and tense all the time. While we are in such a weird political space, I'm happy to see support for LGBT rights becoming increasingly more universal. Amidst chaos and tragedy, it seems like a bright beacon of hope that LOVE and PRIDE are also prevailing. As fashion generally expresses the political culture of the times, it's exciting to see so many designers embracing the rainbow trend. Love and color- two things where more is always better!

STUDIO DAYS // HOWL at Alternative Fashion Week

Studio-Days-HOWL-at-AFW-Beggining

You guys!! I got to live out one of my lifelong dreams last Sunday and I've been dying to share these pictures with you! I was so excited to not only get to flex my design muscles creating a Howl brand collection for Columbus' Alternative Fashion Week, but when Shiree Houf (my co-designer on this collection) and I arrived at the venue, we found out we were closing the show! It was SUCH a cool experience!

Studio-Days-HOWL-at-AFW-Backstage

The opportunity itself was really exciting, but I felt especially thrilled to get to share it with some super-talented family members. My li'l sis, Brooke, came along as my assistant because she's a crafty godsend and just the best ever. I love having her at these types of things because no matter how high-stress a situation, she always keeps it cool, which is just exactly what everyone needs. Zach's li'l sis (and my future li'l sis), Madison, was one of our models. She's pretty new to the modeling world and it's just been so cool to watch her grow. You can see her stomp it out for us in this video (and like her modeling page while you're there!). Also, my brother-in-law's sister (that's a mouthful), Dominique, and her stylist friend, Rachel, came and rocked out our hair and makeup. Dayton-area friends, if you need a stylist, I'd definitely recommend checking these ladies out. Not only is Dominique the only person who ever gets my platinum just right, but both the girls were just a complete blast to be around! It was a sisters' and extended-sisters' weekend! Go team!

Studio-Days-HOWL-at-AFW-Runway-1

After a lot of fun backstage, it was time to hit the runway! We had a couple of major themes in this collection. First, and most importantly, is color! We went heavy with the white and denim, but made sure to throw in lots of pops of rainbow colors! Silver was tied through as a glam touch. Seriously, how major are those pleated pants?!

Studio-Days-HOWL-at-AFW-Runway-2

We also added lots of athletic touches, using quilted sweatshirt material and classic sporty trim. The white dress with the rainbow buttons over the sweatpants was one of my favorite looks. Paired with the silver turban, I think it gives a really great sense of the overall vibe of the collection.

Studio-Days-HOWL-at-AFW-Runway-3

We also put a lot of time and effort into hand-crafted details. In this image alone, we've got the sporty cropped cardigan, which was made out of hand-woven velour, a quilted vegan leather top with custom-dyed fringe over a patchwork skirt, a hand-embroidered denim top, and, while you can't see much of it here, the white skirt and pants were painted and embellished by (you guessed it) our own (tired) hands.

Studio-Days-HOWL-at-AFW-Finale

Closing out the show was so cool! And I was SO proud of the models! Overall, we just wanted this collection to be a total explosion of happiness and fun, and that's exactly how it came out! The girls danced and spun on the runway to Mika's Grace Kelly (I could be brown, I could be blue, I could be violet sky- a perfect compliment to our rainbow collection) and it was one of the most purely happy moments of my life.

I've gotten many questions about purchasing pieces and the wheels are in motion! The silver turbans and some other accessories will be available VERY soon! I'm still working on the details regarding clothing production, but I hope to also have some of these pieces available in the near future. You can show support for the brand and stay up-to-date on the latest collection news by following HOWL on Instagram and Facebook!

THE OFFBEAT BRIDE // 8 Great Sites to Shop for Unexpected Wedding Dresses

That movie, The Five-Year Engagement, might as well have been written about me and Zach. We're going into 3 1/2 years, and I have to say, I'm still a little unsure about what we plan to do. I think we're leaning more and more towards a spur-of-the-moment elopement, but one thing is for sure, regardless of what form the nuptials end up taking, this bride-to-be has done her research! One of the reasons I have had such a hard time pinning down plans is that, of all the wedding resources out there, none of it actually feels "right" for us. I guess we are about as non-traditional as it gets. And honestly, non-traditional wedding resources are hard to find. So over the next six months I have given myself two important goals: 1. Figure out a wedding plan, even if it involves matching tuxedo t-shirts at the courthouse (actually, I really dig this idea...) and 2. Share the many, many, many out-of-the-box wedding ideas I have found and considered with you all. So if you know any brides-to-be that march to the beat of their own drum, point them to this series! All my creative, clever, weird little brides, this series is for you!

Offbeat-Bride-Eight-Sites-for-Unexpected-Wedding-Gowns-Title

To kick things off, let's look at one of the most important aspects of the wedding day- what you're going to wear! If you've always envisioned yourself in a traditional ballgown, more power to you! You have a lot of options to choose from. However, if you're more like me and can't picture yourself in a big white gown to save your life, the task is a bit harder, but also really fun! The great news is that you've made a decision to reflect your unique personal style on your big day. Now the job is to simply find the dress (or jumpsuit or separates) that scream "you"! I've put together eight great sites that offer some more "creative" options to help you kick off your search.

1. Reformation

Offbeat-Bride-Eight-Sites-for-Unexpected-Wedding-Gowns-Reformation

Reformation is a great place to look for clean and classic silhouettes that are also extremely current. They do have several stunning white gowns, but I particularly love the floral prints and bold colors for both the bridal party and the bride! With price tags ranging from about $250-$650, you're also getting a lot of style bang for your buck.

2. Stone Fox Bride

Offbeat-Bride-Eight-Sites-for-Unexpected-Wedding-Gowns-Stone-Fox-Bride

No matter the era, from a colorful flowing bohemian gown to a retro white bustier, everything at Stone Fox Bride gives me Old Hollywood vibes. With a wide range of styles and sizes, you're bound to find an out-of-the-box treasure here. Make sure to check out the crown and veil sections for additional gorgeousness.

3. Mara Hoffman

Offbeat-Bride-Eight-Sites-for-Unexpected-Wedding-Gowns-Mara-Hoffman

For fashion-forward brides, Mara Hoffman's bridal line offers some really unique options. From relaxed shirt dress-inspired maxis to elaborately beaded and textured gowns with bold silhouettes, one thing is for sure, you will be making a total style statement in one of these looks!

4. Free People

Offbeat-Bride-Eight-Sites-for-Unexpected-Wedding-Gowns-Free-People

I'm assuming we all know by now that Free People has a ceremonial collection, FP Ever After, but are we all aware of the fact that it's completely stunning? Keeping in line with the brand, everything has a bohemian quality, ranging from stylish jumpsuits to relaxed crocheted midi dresses to full-on boho-glam sequin gowns. Free People was a leader in the off-the-shoulder revolution and continues to offer wonderful sleeved options and unexpected silhouettes.

5. Viva Aviva

Offbeat-Bride-Eight-Sites-for-Unexpected-Wedding-Gowns-Viva-Aviva

Speaking of unexpected silhouettes, holy sculptural canoli! Viva Aviva offers dramatic ruffles and architectural shapes, mostly in the form of mix and match separates. The collection is small, but if you're looking to make a fashion-forward statement unlike any brides before you, these pieces will do that in spades.

6. Bona Drag

Offbeat-Bride-Eight-Sites-for-Unexpected-Wedding-Gowns-Bona-Drag

Label-lovers will rejoice in Bona Drag's ceremonial collection. It's a tight selection, but if you've had your eye on, say, last season's ruffled Zimmerman gown at a discounted price (or perhaps a turtleneck swing dress and a shrug made of chains), this site will make you very happy. This one is for the very bold, but even the more tentative will enjoy the vast selection of unique ring options.

7. BHLDN

Offbeat-Bride-Eight-Sites-for-Unexpected-Wedding-Gowns-BHLDN

I've been looking at the BHLDN site for years- it's always gorgeous. A sister brand to Anthropologie, BHLDN offers that same beautiful, vintage-inspired quality in some truly breath-taking gowns. The real standouts to me, however, are the trendier top and skirt separates and the charming accent pieces, like that capelet above.

8. Daughters of Simone

Offbeat-Bride-Eight-Sites-for-Unexpected-Wedding-Gowns-Daughters-of-Simone

I'll never forget stumbling upon Daughters of Simone years ago. While I'm unsure of so many aspects of my own wedding, I knew for sure that I wanted an off-the-shoulder dress. A few years ago these were much harder to find than they are now, and seeing the 60s and 70s vintage gowns on Daughters of Simone was like a shining beacon of hope. They've since expanded and now have an expansive collection of dresses and accessories along with their vintage gowns. This site is a boho bride's dream come true.

Now, fellow off-beat brides, let me hear from you! What sites would you add to this list? What areas would you like to see covered in future posts? Let your voice be heard in the comments!

STUDIO DAYS // The Beginning Stages of HOWL

Studio-Days-Beginnings-of-HOWL-Header-Image-2

One of the hardest things about being a "creative" is that it can be a real challenge to wrap up for other people that age-old small talk go-to, "What do you do?" Sometimes I think you could ask my closest family and friends what I do all day and many of them wouldn't exactly know. I wear a lot of strange design "hats" and I'm not always the best about sharing the finer details of that with the world. Maybe it's classic middle child syndrome or something, but attention or praise is just about the last thing I even think of when I'm working on a project. It was pointed out to me recently that because of this, I don't really share enough of my creative work and that it possibly holds me back in progressing my career. This is something I've been thinking a lot about lately. I often feel like the act of blogging alone is so self-focused that saying, "Hey guys, look at this other stuff, too!" is a little bit of overkill, but according to my friend (and every biz post ever written) this opinion is pretty off base.

Anyway, that is the long-winded backstory on this new post series. The short version: I'm hoping to start chronicling and sharing more of my projects here on the blog. My life lately has been pretty consumed with launching a clothing/accessories brand with my design partner, Shiree Houf. The brand, HOWL, is a combination of our last names. We just created a Facebook page and Instagram account about one minute ago (literally), so if you want to be among the first likes and follows, please hop on over! We have been very busy working on our first full collection for Alternative Fashion Week here in Columbus.

Studio-Days-Beginnings-of-HOWL-Prelim-Sketches

These are some very preliminary sketches. They've changed A LOT since this picture was taken, but I don't want to give away too much of our final designs. ;)

Studio-Days-Beginning-of-HOWL-AFW-Band-Styled-Shoots

I've been a part of Alternative Fashion Week before as a band stylist and blogger. Those pics above, taken by Meghan Ralston, are of local bands, Trachete and The Salty Caramels. I LOVE styling shoots, especially with bands because they always have such cool personal style, but I've never actually shows a full fashion collection as a designer before, so that makes this year even more exciting for me.

Studio-Days-Beginnings-of-HOWL-Bracelet-Packs

In an attempt to not let a little thing like an out-of-reach budget hold us back, we ran a fundraising campaign selling handmade friendship bracelets and, because our friends and family are obviously incredible, we reached our goal! We actually met it on my birthday, so that was extra special. The materials list is pretty endless (think zippers, snaps, linings, garment bags, shoes, etc.) so these bad boys are still on sale for anyone interested. Donations of $10 come with a friendly rope bracelet, while $25 gets you a mix-and-match set of three.

Studio-Days-Beginnings-of-HOWL-Fabric-Swatches

Now that you've heard my official Shark Tank investment pitch, let me tell you about our collection! There are several points of inspiration: Star Wars, the 70s, athletic wear, chunky woven textures. It's got a lot going on, but there is one thing that every single piece has in spades and that's COLOR!! We are using a rainbow-inspired color scheme. The specific goal was to have a rainbow that was a little bit "off." Colors that are non-traditional to the good ole' ROY G. BIV, like salmon and mint, are what really make the color palette exciting to me.

Studio-Days-Beginnings-of-HOWL-Woven-Strips

We've been doing a lot of hand-crafted textiles, like the picture above. It's a black quilted "vegan" leather that we cut into strips and sewn into tubes, which we then used those to create our own woven textile. For now you'll have to use your imagination on what this will become, but I think the woven pieces are turning out so cool! They make me really excited to see everything in it's final stage.

Studio-Days-Beginnings-of-HOWL-Rainbow-Buttons

We have a lot of white and denim pieces, but each look, even a classic flowing white shirt dress has a pop of color with a row of rainbow buttons. These buttons we actually made ourselves (and by these I mean several hundred of these) with a button tool because the only rainbow sets we found were the standard spectrum and, like I said, we're pretty committed to those "off" colors.

Studio-Days-Beginnings-of-HOWL-Fringe

We have made a lot of fringe. We looked into buying fringe at first, but decided instead to make it out of white cotton denim and dye it an assortment of colors. In retrospect this idea might possibly have been crazy (I won't be starting a fringe-making club anytime soon), but I do love how the colors came out and I'm really excited for the fringed garments.

Studio-Days-Beginnings-of-HOWL-Promo-Shoot

Thanks to the help of some friends, we were able to put together a little impromptu promo shoot. Our model, Madison Wilz, and photographer, Laurel Harvey, both deserve trophies because they helped squeeze this shoot into the narrowest of scheduling slots. Luckily, they're both total pros, so as much as we were flying by the seat of our pants that afternoon, I think the pictures turned out so good! If you're in the South/Central Ohio area and are looking for a great photographer, Laurel is really talented and working with her was wonderful. Our model, Madison, is actually my future sister-in-law and she'll be walking in our runway show, too. Isn't she the cutest? :)

Studio-Days-Beginnings-of-HOWL-Promo-Shoot-Gray-Edited

The show is June 12th so the next weeks are going to be pretty intense. We've got a lot of Alternative Fashion Week-related events coming up, including model fittings, an event called Couture Cuisine, where chefs will create dishes inspired by some of the designers' past looks, a Gallery Hop Pop-up Shop, where we'll be selling some of our jewelry and accessories, and filming our designer interview videos, which will be played before our runway show.

Now the real question is, when in the world am I going to have time to get my ridiculous roots done?! For real though, I'm thinking about kicking my platinum up a notch to icy white, almost gray, like this gorgeous 'do. Please live up to your reader's civic duty and place your hair vote in the comments. ;) I can't wait to share more of the process and eventually the final product with you!

#MonthlyMani: DIY Brushstrokes

I'm linking up again with my gal pals for our #MonthlyMani! I was half-tempted to skip out on this month because, after working on our Alternative Fashion Week collection for the past month, my nails and cuticles have seen better days. But since this month's theme, Art-Inspired, was so close to my heart, I couldn't pass it up! So here it is, dry skin and all, my DIY brushstroke mani.

I was drawn to this idea of creating abstract brushstrokes for a number of reasons. Firstly, I love a splash of color and this look has that in spades. Secondly, it just doesn't get much easier than randomly placed paint dollops and in my book that is something to celebrate.

To get the look, I started with a nude base coat. Then I chose my rainbow of colors and instead of flicking on the color with the nail polish brush, I used a paintbrush for a more jagged edge. To switch colors, all you have to do is swish the brush around in some nail polish remover, pat dry on a paper towel, and you're good to go.

I've loved that every time I look down and get a glimpse of my hand, I have all these great colors looking back at me! I think this mani was one of my favorites to date. It's what I consider the perfect combo- pretty and a little messy- and the art inspiration really suits my personality.

FRIDAY VIBES // Crafted Denim

Friday-Vibes-Crafted-Denim-Space-Pants

Major nostalgic trend alert! Embroidery, appliques, flare pins, patches, even paint- basically anything from your craft closet is taking over the denim world right now. I love this look, not only because it reminds me of my childhood, but also because it offers so many incredible options for adding a boost of personality to an old jean jacket on the cheap. I'm overflowing with DIY inspiration right now!

IN THE MOOD FOR // Western Wear

Mood-Western-Wear-Moodboard

Fashion is home on the range as of late, with embroidered denim, flowing fringe, and even flashy belt buckles popping up everywhere. It makes sense with the overflow of 70s trends, since so many of these two styles overlap or mix together seamlessly. Think a fringe jacket over a 70s tie neck blouse. A western denim shirt tucked into a pair of flares. A pair of cowgirl mules with a romantic flowing maxi dress. A bolo necklace paired with a low-neck jumpsuit. You get the idea. If it's 70s, if it's western, it's on the radar.

The LISTS // March: Spring Fresh

You guys, I'm really excited about this month's lists! Spring is just around the corner and I'm really feeling the buzz of energy that comes with the season. It's great to feel like something new is happening, isn't it?

This wishlist and playlist are dedicating to exactly that: the fresh, brand new feeling of spring. I've got some items I'm coveting as well as some of my favorite songs right now, all fresh and brand-spanking new!

#MonthlyMani // Simple Nail Art Inspired by Candy Buttons

DIY-Monthly-Mani-Candy-Buttons-Main-Image

It's the third Tuesday of the month, which means I'm linking up once again with the ladies of #MonthlyMani! Our theme this month was Candy Colors, and with so many pretty options I had a really hard time coming up with this one. I was in idea overload!

I considered all the bright, crazy-patterned options, but it when it comes down to it, I'm really most inspired by more minimal nail art lately. I am also loving simple geometric shapes likes dots and stripes.

DIY-Monthly-Mani-Candy-Buttons-3

So this look, inspired by old-fashion candy button strips, gives me the best of both worlds. It's simple, both in looks and effort, but still has a great splash of color. While I'm sure a dotting tool would work wonders, I've never owned one because I think the tip of a bobby pin works perfectly.

DIY-Monthly-Mani-Candy-Buttons-2

I just dotted the design on, one color at a time. The only thing slightly tricky here is getting them centered and keeping your hand steady. A trick I learned in art school is to rest your elbow on something and your hand instantly becomes steady.

Overall, I love the look! It's fun and graphic without feeling too in your face. If you wanted an even more toned-down, office-ready look, using a muted purple, gray, or black instead of the candy colors would be gorgeous!

Check out these ladies for some more candy-colored inspiration!
